Being in a situation where you want to talk to your partner physically but you can’t, instead you only make use of gadgets. You’d be away from each other for weeks (probably months) without seeing each other, then you start to wonder do long distance relationships work?. Well, welcome to the reality of being in a long distance relationship.
Long-distance relationships work if you ask me, but it’s very hard to keep up with. Long-distance relationships are quite popular among high school couples going to separate colleges (yeah, been there and it didn’t work) and it’s also very common among married or engaged couples who work in different locations. But the main question most people ask is do long-distance relationships work?.
Are you about to start a long-distance relationship and you’re afraid that it might not last because of the location? are you curious to know if long-distance relationships work?. Well, there are good sides and bad sides to long distance relationships. So let’s check out the takeaways and downsides of how long distance relationships work.
Do long distance relationships work?
As much as I want to answer this question immediately, but unfortunately I won’t or let’s just say I can’t, nobody can actually. Until you’ve seen the pros and cons then maybe you can decide if long distance relationship is something you can handle.
Advantages and Disadvantages of long distance relationships
Advantages( why a long distance relationship can work)
- You can set your goals and focus fully on them
- Test of trust and commitment
- Everytime spent means a lot
- It makes the relationship bond stronger
- Blessing in disguise
1. You can set your goals and focus fully on them
A Long distance relationship can be a very good excuse to set your own goals and work towards achieving them. You are a student who just got into college and you’re in a long-distance relationship with your high school boyfriend.
Well, going on a long distanced relationship would help you settle more in college, focus on your college goals and work towards achieving them. Although this point might actually sound good, it doesn’t feel entirely good for everyone. This point will most likely be for college students because they are looking towards their dreams, but what about grownups that are living their dreams already, well, not so much because they’re experienced and are not easily distracted. So the idea of gaining more focus because of long-distance relationships doesn’t really apply to Adults(grownups).
2. Test of trust and commitment
A long-distance relationship is a good way to know if your partner trusts in you to know that you wouldn’t do awful things around them. It’s the perfect test for commitment.
Commitment is a very big word in a relationship, any relationship looking to flourish would need commitment to do so. Long-distance relationships are not all bad because it helps to know how committed you both are in the relationship.
3. Everytime spent means a lot
After being away from your partner for so long, every time you spend together will be cherished and well appreciated, and it will leave less room for silly couples quarrels you probably had before, not that you wouldn’t fight but you’d want to make sure you make-up as soon as possible because of the limited time you have to spend with each other.
4. It makes the relationship bond stronger
As risky as it is, being in a long distance relationship might be just what you need in the relationship. Sometimes couples need time away from each other, sometimes distanced relationships tightens the bond and most times it doesn’t, so a distanced relationship might just be what you need to know which direction the relationship is going.
5. Blessing in disguise
Most long-distance relationships barely last because both partners might not be interested in each other anymore. But it could be a blessing in disguise because after being away from each other for too long, and the feelings you had before are still there, then it might be a sign that you’re meant for each other and you both might consider pushing the relationship to the next level.
Disadvantages (Why long distance relationships can’t work)
- Short life span
- Trust issues
- Cheating is very likely
Everyone wants to hear the advantages because no doubt good things makes us motivated and it gives us reasons to keep pushing, but bad things raise awareness, and in this case, we all want to be aware of what we’re doing or what we are about to do.
Loneliness is a huge effect on long-distance relationships. It’s not that you won’t have friends that’ll keep you company but you’d find it hard to cope. Most people won’t be able to deal with the fact that their partner is away and this leads to the kind of loneliness that not even your friend’s company can fill.
2. Short life span
Almost all the long-distance relationships I have heard of are short-lived. When you talk to your partner through gadgets all the time, it can really get tiring and frustrating.
You might be too busy for each other, let’s say you’re both students, one might be too tired from classes and all, and the other will be tired too and there will be less communication. Both couples will then check all the factors standing in their way and might eventually call it quits.
3. Trust issues
Trust issue is one thing you don’t want in any relationship talk more of a long distance relationship. Lack of trust in a normal relationship can ruin it in no time.
Partner’s who are in a long distance relationship might find it hard to trust each other, they will often get jealous of the slightest thing because they were not there to see for themselves.
4. Cheating is very likely
Now, it will take an experienced couple to go on a long-distance relationship and not cheat. Partner’s that aren’t experienced in relationships are liable to cheat on each other.
Cheating in a long-distance relationship is very common among teenagers and youths who aren’t really matured in the relationship field.
People tend to change after being in different locations for a long time, and on getting back you’d almost not recognize them anymore, it might be their body or character.
After being away from each other for too long, a lot of things will change, and things might not be as they used to be, thereby leading to misunderstanding because they don’t understand each other anymore.
do long distance relationships work?
Long-distance relationships are very hard to keep up with, but if your’s works out then that’s good but if it doesn’t, then maybe you aren’t right for each other.
But mind you, going on a long-distance relationship is almost like gambling, especially if you aren’t matured in the relationship aspect.
How to make your long distance relationship work
Honestly, it depends on preference, but you can actually make it work by opening up to each other about everything from the good to the bad. After all, you’re a couple and what are you a couple for if you can’t tell each other everything.
